QLogitek Provides CPSIA Compliance Services to Canadian and US Importers

Toronto (June 29, 2009) - The US congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) on August 14, 2008. In response to this legislation and to help the CPG supplier community QLogitek has launched a set of services and products. A comprehensive software solution to meet the needs of North American manufacturers, importers and distributors for CPSIA compliance will be available in beta-release shortly.

For the past year, the QLogitek team has assisted a major Canadian exporter to the United States (and importer of items from China into Canada) in successfully interpreting and meeting the requirements of the CPSIA compliance legislation.  The team was involved in the very earliest stages of the act's implementation. Through that relationship, QLogitek has developed an insider understanding of the processes required to import and export consumer products profitably, legally, and ethically under the CPSIA legislation.

Although the CPSIA is basically a self-certification requirement, the nuances are many and implications critical. Clarifications on the scope of the CPSIA and details of compliance are still being released. Regardless, the act is being enforced; on June 5, 2009 Mattel/Fisher Price was fined $2.3 Million USD for CPSIA violations in children's toy products. Given this scenario, it is important that importers of CPG goods to the US and Canada begin work on CPSIA compliance.

QLogitek has been tracking the evolution of Bill C-6 (the Canadian equivalent of CPSIA) through the Parliament of Canada. Bill C-6 is likely to be expedited given the announcement by Health Canada regarding phthalates and lead in children's products on June 19, 2009.
